If an ice blue dial hints at platinum, if two dots on a crown stand for Twinlock and crowns flanking “Swiss Made” at 6 o’clock refer to a latest-generation movement, then I think, it makes sense to expect that a fluted bezel stands for 18k gold.

Rolex sees it in a different light and, frankly, its take makes sense — even easing the stirred soul of this fluted bezel fan. Basically, the fluted bezel in platinum was realized because it always should have been around. The high quality Rolex Day-Date fake watches debuted in both gold and platinum right at the launch of the collection and, had the know-how existed, it would have had a platinum fluted bezel on it right from the start. Now that the manufacturing technology exists, Rolex “fixes” this inconsistency, and the Day-Date in platinum comes with a fluted bezel.

Shaping platinum is like shaping ice-cold butter with a hot knife: It takes force to push the knife through and, as you proceed, the butter melts and sticks to it while also refusing to take a sharp, defined form. Rolex worked on its in-house production techniques to enable the production of a platinum fluted bezel.

The machine, sort of like a guilloche machine, works on a “coin” of platinum and, using extremely sharp diamond tools, makes super clean and strong cuts into the precious metal. Extreme precision and perfectly calculated force need to be used — and even with all of that, it will probably take around 10-times as long to produce a fluted bezel, not in 18k-gold but in platinum. The fabrication of other platinum components, like cases, crowns, or bracelet links, also tend to have a tenfold difficulty factor over soft and compliant gold.

Was the extra effort worth it? That’s all for you to decide. Ariel has recently photographed the Day-Date 40 in platinum with a domed bezel, a watch that is no longer made in that configuration, so you have a chance to compare the two. If you are asking me, the perfect Day-Date has always been the 36mm version in platinum, and now that it comes with a fluted bezel, I don’t think of it any less. It’s still the definitive, “I’m done with China Rolex fake watches but I’ll get just one to wear forevermore” watch, in my eyes. It’s gloriously heavy, yet compliant around the wrist, it’s water-resistant to 100 meters, so you never have to worry about it, and it’s supposed to keep excellent time with Rolex’s latest generation, 70-hour power reserve 3255 movement. Oh, and it’s confident in its status, but — in 36mm size, at least — it is borderline low-key when compared to the “look at me!” high-status luxury watches of today. What more do you want from an “escape watch?”

At first glance, this is what all auction hunters cherish — a rich, tropical-dialed, vintage be-crowned chronograph. To quote the owner, Mr. S.C.G., “I’ve always been fascinated by the footprint of time on objects and by the sentimental value they bring us. I’ve worn the same top Rolex replica watches for several years, so I contacted ADG to add a special touch. A timeworn feel that would make it even more unique.”A similar approach is what incites the atelier to embark on each separate project, and for the “Rusty”, this included a tropical holiday for the dial.

It goes deeper than patina

More than a sum of elaborate parts

Back in its case, the dial is framed by a brown bakelite bezel with honey-colored numerals. The now brown-tinged dial has amber-colored counters and text, with a vintage-looking lume that glows brown at night. This infuses the dial with a warmth that might be man-made but, for Mr. S.C.G., is highly sentimental. And the “Rusty” Project does not end with one of the richest honey dials out there. The movement itself is re-worked and skeletonized. The 4130 caliber is hand-beveled and reveals a subtle contrast. Mr. S.C.G. will see rose gold geartrain details through a new sapphire case back, something I’m sure many a 116520 owner would love to have.

What is personal perfection worth?

To sum it up, a book is a lot more than its cover. Personalization can also mean so much more than a first impression. For me, that means that this small atelier of craftsmen changed my perceptions of one of the most popular grails. I wasn’t a fan of the Swiss movements replica Rolex Daytona watches, but now? If I had the funds, I would happily invest in a bespoke, modded one. In fact, that might be the only way I’d want this chronograph. And that says a lot for the work of Artisans de Genève.

Two 1:1 Canada Rolex Cosmograph Daytona replica watches fetched a total of £62,534 at a Birmingham auction today.
